What Causes Orange Peel in Automotive Paint?

Orange peel gets its name because the surface resembles the skin of an orange. It can happen at the factory, after collision repair, or during a custom repaint. The texture may come from spray-gun setup, coating thickness, air pressure, flash times, paint temperature, solvent selection, or the way a panel was sprayed.

A little factory texture is common, even on expensive vehicles. Manufacturers balance appearance with production speed and durability. A custom finish, restoration, or high-end repair may call for a flatter, deeper finish than the vehicle had when new. That is where wet sanding and flow coating can make a visible difference.
